Terry Riley

In C (1964)

Terry Riley’s In C is one of the first and style- defining works of the so-called Minimal Music. The structure of In C is characterized by 53 repetitive patterns; slowly phasing, overlapping and shifting, they combine to create a timeless, psychedelic, uniquely characteristic piece. But driven by the free choice of the musicians to change the pattern at will, they always combine to create a very unique performance.

His influence on later US- and European composers, but also on the development of electronic club-music as well as pop music nowadays, is not to be dismissed. The 1964 composed work premiered in San Francisco the same year - the birthdate of Minimal Music.

Friday, February 14th

stargaze plays Bryce Dessner: Aheym

Bryce Dessner wrote his first string quartet Aheym for the Kronos Quartet, mostly associated with US minimalist Steve Reich. The classically trained Dessner has been part of Reich's ensemble and his compositions are characterized by a post-minimalistic style. Better known as guitarist of the band The National, Dessner is also part of the mostly instrumental band Clogs as well as head of MusicNow in Cincinnati, an annual festival of exciting contemporary and progressive music, bands and ensembles.

Holy Other with Cantus Domus

Holy Other from Manchester is - ever since his EP With U (2011)as well as the LP Held (2012, both on Tri Angle) appeared on the market – a worldwide respected producer for electronic music. For stargaze presents, Holy Other will be accompanied by Cantus Domus, one of Berlin's most interesting and exciting choirs. This get-together is a new step for Holy Other, leading the producer to a new, even more spherical and dense sound where electronic meets vocal music. There will also be a performance of Nico Muhly's Like as the Hart for choir, violin and percussion.

Nils Frahm and stargaze play In C

The first version of Terry Riley's In C will be performed by Nils Frahm with stargaze. First classically trained, the pianist soon developed his very own ambient sound with minimalistic and improvisational elements. Next to his frequent use of the piano, Frahm also found his way into analogue synthesizers, leading to a larger spectrum of sound and the use of electronic music. Frahm's musical curiosity led to several collaborations with musicians like Peter Broderick, Ólafur Arnalds and Greg Haines, all associated with Erased Tapes, a label quite known for his often ground-breaking releases of music between popular and classical.

Saturday, February 15th

stargaze plays Ben Shemie: Positive Feedback

Next to being the singer & guitarist of Canadian band Suuns, Ben Shemie does also work as a composer for contemporary classical music. Stargaze will perform his piece Positive Feedback accompanied by a video showing Shemie's cousin playing a synchronized guitar-feedback interfering as well as interacting with the strings. As front man of Suuns, the singer is mostly known for his often angst-ridden but still melodic voice accompanied by the minimalistic but immensely impulsive sound of the band.

1000 Robota with stargaze and Cantus Domus

Known as enfantes terribles ever since they've released the EP Hamburg brennt and the LP Du nicht er nicht sie nicht in 2008 the young punks 1000 Robota from Hamburg have grown into a musically multiple-faced band. While the early music is filled with anger and severely criticizing their surroundings, the band developed a more personal, still angry voice enriched with poetic lyrics and a more epic sound.

Pantha du Prince and The Bell Laboratory play In C

On Pantha du Prince's solo albums, melodic soundscapes are liaising with beats originated in Deep House Music - often accompanied by the unique sound of bells. With The Bell Laboratory, the atmospherical electronics and the nature of the bells are supported and even more elaborated by the use of percussive instruments like gongs, cymbals, marimbas and the spectacular carillon. Leading to the release of Elements of Light in 2012 on Rough Trade Records, Pantha du Prince and The Bell Laboratory will now team up for the exclusive performance of Riley's In C, combining a classical composition with electronic music.

Sunday, February 16th

Pekka Kuusisto, Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, André de Ridder – Violin Concerto by Owen Pallett

Owen Pallett is part of a young generation of classical music-trained composers and songwriters, equally working in the alternative as well as classical music scene. The Canadian violinist is best known for his string-arrangements and work for Arcade Fire, as well as his solo-project Final Fantasy (later under his real name). In 2012 he has been commissioned to write a Violin Concerto for and with Pekka Kuusisto, the Finnish soloist who is well known for his refreshing approach to classical music. For the German Premiere of Pallett’s Violin Concerto, André de Ridder will conduct the adventurous Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop from Berlin – a young string-ensemble seeking for new concepts to perform and present music from early baroque to contemporary classical music.

My Brightest Diamond and Zafraan Ensemble

My Brightest Diamond is the project of opera-singer, songwriter and composer Shara Worden. She recently composed a baroque opera, You Us We All, next to this she received several commissions from New York based music groups. Additionally, many composers, songwriters and filmmakers have sought out Worden’s distinctive voice, including David Lang, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, David Byrne & Fatboy Slim, as well as Matthew Barney & Jonathan Bepler. With Berlin-based Zafraan Ensemble – a group of innovative and professional musicians - she will perform new songs as well as old material, accompanied by Earl Harvin (Drums) and Fontaine Burnett (bass).

Tyondai Braxton and Mouse on Mars play In C

The American composer Tyondai Braxton has written several pieces for New York based ensembles, pioneering new approaches in contemporary music: The Bang On A Can All Stars, Kronos Quartet and Alarm Will Sound. In 2009, the former bandleader and creative mind of experimental band Battles, published the renowned album Central Market, which he performed with several well-respected orchestras. Mouse on Mars, pioneers of new and experimental electronic music, have been out there for over 21 years already and are still producing one exciting and musically unexpected album after the other, always reinventing each other - "It's impossible for Mouse on Mars not to make fascinating, truly exciting music." ( Next to this, Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma are involved in several side-projects and collaborations: The last performance of In C will lead to a unique get-together of Tyondai Braxton and Mouse on Mars.
